About the competition

The Western Isles Young Musician of the Year competition is an annual event which started in the early 1990s and is organised and run by a small committee of local musicians and teachers. The competition made a very welcome return in 2022 after several years of COVID-19 disruption.

Competitions are open to  pupils currently attending school in the Western Isles. There are separate primary, junior (S1-3) and senior (S4-6) categories for singing, solo instrumental music as well as competitions for composition and ensemble playing.

All elements of the competition take place in Stornoway throughout the day with the grand finale taking place in the evening. This year the preliminary sections of the singing competition will take place on the Friday evening with the Senior final taking place on the Saturday evening.

Following the grand finale one representative from the Western Isles is selected from either the solo instrumental or senior singing competition to take part in the national Scottish Young Musicians festival of music which is held annually at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow.
